FPS at The Muse

31 July - 17 August

PV 31 July, 6-9pm

This extraordinary event celebrates the diverse expressions of the members of the FPS (Free Painters and Sculptors).  Founded in 1952 by artists associated with the ICA, FPS emerged in post-war Britain with a radical belief in artistic autonomy. Originally known as the Painters Group from the ICA, FPS welcomed artists with a ‘modern approach’—those working in both abstract and figurative modes—at a time when breaking from rigid, academic conventions was both bold and necessary.

The works showcased in this exhibition exemplify the vibrant interplay of tradition and innovation that defines FPS. Each piece speaks of the dynamism of its creator and the organisation’s enduring commitment to pushing creative boundaries. From bold abstraction to intimate realism, these works capture the complexities of contemporary experience while allowing each artist to explore their unique narrative without constraint, as is the ethos of FPS.

Each creation is a testament to the transformative power of art, evoking a range of emotions and ideas that resonate deeply with viewers. The exhibition invites us to engage not only with the aesthetic beauty of the works but also with the questions and dialogues they provoke about society, individuality, and creativity. This curated selection highlights the interplay of light and texture, form and colour, fostering a deeper connection between the audience and the art.

The members explore and experiment, each member creating captivating works that blend traditional techniques with modern interpretations. For this exhibition the artists had freedom to choose any theme which has created a varied and dynamic  exhibition, including sculptures, abstract paintings, portraits, landscapes and seascapes.

Today, FPS remains an established, artist-led organisation, based in London and exhibiting regularly across the capital and the Southeast. The evolving membership of painters, sculptors, printmakers and photographers represents a broad spectrum of contemporary practice and career stages. Through initiatives such as Monthly Artist Exchange sessions—informal Zoom-based gatherings where members share updates, present work, and connect in a supportive environment—it continues to foster a culture of artistic generosity, critical thinking, and creative growth.

With over 70 years of experience FPS helps artist build long-term networks that develop artistic sustainability, exposure and sales, encouraging artist to create works on their own terms and therefore be ‘free’.
