Drawing on the walls of The Muse.
Every year The Muse opens its doors to the community and visitors of Portobello Road and invites them to join artists in expressing thoughts and emotions on paper-lined walls of the gallery.
The result is extraordinary, as the collective consciousness of the area manifests on our walls. Each year reflective of a zeitgeist, whether a stream of consciousness inspired by the first doodle of the show; or a thread of experiences shared by the demography of those curious enough to come in.
Sometimes angry, sometimes hopeful; more often than not, portraiture or evidence of the natural world and the aspirations of the artists. We’ve seen it all, profanity, genius and many introspective moments of humans spending a minute to let their thoughts unfold.
Whether amateur, professional or the marks of kids still in their prams, as they scribble on the walls; the ultimate creation is a looking glass into a connectivity of thought.
The archive of paper rolls still monopolises our one (almost) useful storage cupboard.
Perhaps one day anthropologists will Muse our rolls to decipher the psychology of the turn of the millennia, perhaps not. Either way, come on down and ‘Make your mark’ on our walls and be free for an hour two in heart of Portobello Road.
