Sue Rubin - Paintings
Opening Night 22 October 2026, 5-8pm
The artist says:
“I enjoy working in oil paint and drawing with charcoal; I look for shapes in space, mostly I lose myself in colour and form, the curves and rhythms and am inspired by how things relate to each other - the exhilaration of seeing colours reverberate off one another.
I started studying Art after school at Hornsey College of Art in1963 when Johnathan Miller was one of the visiting lecturers. This was interrupted by marriage, children and family life to be resumed 20 years later when I attended various colleges, schools and universities. I am addicted to the experience of learning and experimented in several mediums and was encouraged to exhibit my work and had it accepted by The National society of Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers; The Mall Galleries; The royal society of British Artists; The Horniman Museum; Ben Uri Art Society, local libraries, restaurants and a few solo exhibitions between 1980 and 1994.
The process of learning and creating in different mediums was exciting and I wanted to enable others to experience the sense of play and freedom so I studied psychology, counselling and Art Therapy: I undertook supervised work as an Art Therapist in schools with children, teachers and parents and in institutes for the elderly and disabled I ran groups for the NHS. The lockdown in 2020 stopped my most recent art Therapy Group in a residential home for the elderly.
Now I like to play with colour, with light, with clay and texture. People will always be my favourite subject although I enjoy flowers, landscapes and the sea.
I continue to have great joy in my grandchildren's love of Art whether it be in the production of Installations, pottery, paintings, tattoos, delicate insect drawings, inventive designs or just painterly messes representing Bali waterfalls!”
