Jun Shya

  • Jun Shya (b. 2003) is a Hong Kong visual artist based in London, who recently graduated from Chelsea College of Arts, studying BA Fine Art.

  • Her practice investigates the interplay between reality versus illusion in relation to the coexistence of past and present. Through the intimate gestures of push and pull in a ballet performance, each dancer transforms into a different version of themselves. This metaphor reflects the belief that identity is not fixed, but rather refracted through the subjective perceptions of those around us. Shifting between abstraction and representation through a diverse range of painterly techniques and dynamic compositions, she focuses on concealing parts of the face and body to symbolise the various roles we play in different settings. By incorporating textural materials such as beeswax, sand, and crackle paste, she mimics the materiality of tape and collages to create paintings that question the authenticity of the world we inhabit. A reminder that perception is a fleeting illusion between time and the eye.
