Burnt Ripple - Nicholas Cheeseman
Burnt Ripple - Nicholas Cheeseman
31x24x22cm, 2016 Found wood
This is a carving from a log that I found in my local park. The focus for this vessel was the growth underneath the stump. When I removed the bark I found beautiful ripples of wood. I was very careful to leave this part as close to how I found it as possible. I am not sure whether it is a burr in the strictest sense of the word, as I don't remember the grain being different to the rest of the wood. After shaping the vessel and burning the interior with a blow torch I resanded the exterior. The cracks that run down the side of this work do not detract from this work in any way. I love cracks. These unplanned and uncontrollable elements become the best parts for me. The point on which this sculpture balanced was intentionally very small so its upright position was deliberately precarious - highlighting the fine balance with nature that we require but seem unable to find or maintain.
