Charred Paint - Nicholas Cheeseman
Charred Paint - Nicholas Cheeseman
40x32x20cm, 2016, Acrylic paint, wood
I made this sculpture whilst Artist-in-Residence at the Muse Gallery. During the residency I was playing around with materials and how to combine them. In this piece I wanted to expand my expectations of both paint and wood. I carved a slither of wood from a log and then burnt it until it began losing its structural integrity. After sanding and polishing it back to fresh wood I juxtaposed it with soft folds of paint. The acrylic was poured in layers, allowing each to dry before adding another, and makes an extremely tactile surface. The layers of paint made me think about rings in the log. The contrast between the colour and textures of the natural and man made materials still intrigues me.
