Tate Modern bridge - Nicholas Cheeseman

29x21cm, 2019, Inkjet print, Acrylic paint, pen

This is a view of the Turbine Hall in the Tate Modern seen from the new bridge that connects to the Blavatnik building. When using the panorama mode on my smart phone I noticed that not moving the phone at the correct speed or direction, created a digital glitch in the image. I really enjoy this transition or boundary, and that I could digitally manipulate an image without using any editing software. It is not possible to completely control the outcome, so luck and experimentation are inevitable. We assume that what is recorded through the lens is the truth, but this distortion and fragmentation maybe a more pertinent reflection of reality. When making these works I thought they were about different perspectives, ways of seeing and how the world appears to me. Mostly they are a reflection on growing up during the digital revolution and living in the digital age. They are challenging, confusing and chaotic whilst simultaneously being visually stimulating. I print the images out and try to reclaim control by drawing and painting over the image, using traditional materials to reestablish a sense or order. There is constant flux, change, ebb and flow, yin and yang. In every stage of the process there is something elusive, something that I am trying to achieve that is just out of reach.
