Wooden Blank III - Nicholas Cheeseman
Wooden Blank III - Nicholas Cheeseman
20x5x5cm, 2018
Beech, drill bit, branch, vinyl
This is the last of three experimental pieces I made with wood that I bought rather than found. I am not sure whether the photo can show how beautifully smooth and cool this wood feels. I carved a simple curve at the top and then sanded two sides of the wood so that they are in complete contrast to the other drilled, carved and burnt sides. I liked that from one angle the maquette just looks like a piece of wood, and from the other side all that can be seen is the distressed wood. After burning the wood I resanded some of the holes as well as polishing the charred wood. This created a lovely contrast to the burnt wood that looks like coal. This can be seen in the closeup photo.
